An unhappy woman finds new love with her old boyfriend
in this romantic comedy-drama from writer and director Edward Burns. Patti
(Selma Blair) is a woman in her early thirties living in New York City. For
years, (Patti) chased after her dream of becoming a successful novelist, but
recently she's had to put writing on hold and is unhappily working in real
estate. (Patti)'s ennui isn't helped by the fact her marriage has fallen
into a rut and neither she nor her husband are interested in one another
anymore. When she was in college, (Patti) was in love with (Brian)
({$Patrick Wilson), and while (Brian) is fortunate enough to support himself
writing crime fiction, he's smarting from the uncharitable reviews given to
his latest and most personal work. One night, (Patti) is having dinner with
her best friend (Kate) ({$Debra Messing) when she bumps into (Brian), who is
out with his friend (Murph) ({$Edward Burns), who in turn used to be
involved with (Kate). As the former lovers talk about their past and where
life has taken them, (Patti) finds herself falling for (Brian) all over
again, but both she and (Brian) are still dealing with the differences and
insecurities that drove them apart years before.

Patti Petalson
Thirty-three-year-old Patti Petalson is stuck in a rut; she and her
husband only seem to be occupying the same space, halfheartedly at that,
while she has traded fiction-writing for a career in real estate that leaves
her feeling empty.

Selma
says
"I'm working with Ed Burns here right now, and it's really hard when
you're shooting a movie and you're living in a 10-by-12-foot room."
"It's a short shoot because it's pretty low budget, but I love it. I love
Eddie Burns and I love Patrick Wilson."

Producer Aaron Lubin says
"It’s a relationship comedy about four characters. Debra Messing and
Selma Blair are best friends who went to college together. It’s NYU,
basically, though we’re not calling it that in the film. They’re both now in
their early-to-mid 30s. Selma Blair’s character has written a critically
acclaimed book of short stories but hasn’t written anything else in 12
years. She’s married to a local celebrity chef, played by Donal Logue. He’s
a lecherous cad, basically."
"It’s basically a story about Selma Blair trying to recapture writing as
a career, and also recapturing her first love. It’s romantic, it’s funny,
it’s beautifully shot. It deals with themes of second chances, and is it
possible to even have a second chance."
