America's leading
titan of bad taste, John Waters, returns to X-rated territory (well,
actually NC-17-rated territory, but you get the idea) for this wildly
over-the-top comedy. Sylvia Stickles (Tracey Ullman) is a wife and mother
living in Baltimore who, along with her husband Vaughn (Chris Isaak) and
mother Big Ethel (Suzanne Shepherd), operates a local convenience store. One
day, Sylvia receives a sharp blow to the head, which leaves her with a
concussion. However, the concussion comes with an unexpected side effect --
Sylvia has suddenly become a sex addict, and is soon attended to by the
perverse and lascivious sexual evangelist Ray-Ray (Johnny Knoxville). When
it becomes evident that Vaughn can't keep up with her sensual appetites,
Sylvia throws herself into the strange netherworld of Baltimore's community
of erotic overachievers, which includes her daughter Caprice (Selma Blair),
who is living a double life as über-buxom exotic entertainer Ursula Udders.
A Dirty Shame also features supporting performances from Waters regulars
Patricia Hearst, Mink Stole, Mary Vivian Pearce, Channing Wilroy, and Jean
Hill.

"I play a girl named Ursula Udders. I’m hideous basically. I am a sexy
hideous beast. I am a dancer. I fancy myself to be a dancer. I’m really not
terribly good at it...It [the makeup] was a major, major ordeal! The breasts
were four body casts, and mould making, so it was basically four hours of
prosthetics every day. First gluing them down, then the makeup. There's
nothing humble about me anymore. I've been naked in front of everyone."

says
"How can you be serious on a movie like this? As soon as I put those
breasts on, that was it. I knew what a silly, funny movie I was making."
I admire these directors who have a vision for their movies, John Waters
is a pioneer of these kinds of loud, schlocky films."
"I never get concerned by it,
because I just do the work, and what happens after that is anyone's guess.
Obviously we live in conservative times, and we're so afraid of sex but can
blow each other up without a problem, so the NC 17 is ridiculous, but what
can you do?"
"I think, well I was friends with Johnny [Knoxville] -- we're kind of
pals -- and I wanted to work with John [Waters] years ago but it didn't work
out, because of my schedule -- I don't remember exactly what I was doing at
the time. So, we had met and really got on and he knew that I was ridiculous
[about working with him] and I'd auditioned for him years ago and was just
screaming like a banshee -- just making a fool out of myself. So, he knew I
was game and then Johnny was meeting with John about this movie and
[Knoxville] called me -- and I was in Prague -- and I said "oh my God, I
want to do it! I want to do it too." And he said, like, "hey, okay, I'll
talk to him" and that was it. So then I just got the part and did all this
research -- what a joke. I was with dancers and working with choreographers
-- I wanted to be the best go-go dancer. I wanted to really make people
think that I was a hot, talented little lassie. And then I got the boobs on
and they all went to pieces [laughing] because I couldn't move! Go-go
dancers are tiny, you know, Goldie Hawn framed girls. You can really do all
this stuff [waving arms in front of herself], it's all about the movement in
front of you. And then I have these [prosthetic boobs] and all I could do
was move like an ape instead of all the stuff I'd planned to do."
